Analogue or digital — which business line do you actually have?

Every business telephone line does the same job on the surface: a number rings, a phone answers. Underneath, there are two very different technologies — and knowing which one you're on matters more than ever, because one of them is being switched off.

Analogue lines are the traditional kind — a physical copper pair running from the exchange into your building. They've worked the same way for decades, which is exactly why so much still depends on them: intruder alarms, card machines, fax machines, lift lines and door entry systems were all built around that copper signal. An analogue line needs no broadband, no power at your end beyond the phone itself, and no configuration. It simply works.

Digital lines carry your calls as data over a broadband connection instead. The phone line becomes software, which is where the modern features live — ring groups, smart call routing, voicemail-to-email, and touchscreen handsets managed for you. In between sit ISDN2 and ISDN30 — digital services delivered over the old network, usually feeding an on-premise phone system. Plenty of businesses still run on them, and we still supply and support them. Our line types page compares all of them side by side.

The honest guidance: if your line just needs to ring and be answered — and especially if an alarm or card machine hangs off it — analogue remains the simplest, cheapest option, and unlike most providers we can keep yours running past the switch off. What a business phone line costs — and what retailers charge

Line rental is the clearest example of the wholesale difference. Your line is installed, maintained and repaired by Openreach engineers whichever provider's name is on the bill — so paying a retail margin buys you the same copper, the same faults process and the same engineers. It just costs more.

Retail business line rental typically costs twice as much or more — £25-£40+ a month from major retailers is normal. The copper switch off — and why we're the calm option

The UK's analogue copper phone network is being retired, with January 2027 as the industry deadline. Most providers are using that date to hurry customers onto VoIP now — new kit, new setup, and sometimes a new monthly cost, on a timetable that suits the provider rather than the business.

We're different, and it's the most useful thing about us: we can keep your analogue copper line running until 2030. Same line, same number, same equipment. Your alarm keeps dialling, your card machine keeps taking payments, your fax keeps faxing — and you plan your move to digital when it genuinely suits you, with three extra years in hand. As far as we know, no other provider offers this, which is why businesses that depend on copper-connected kit come to us specifically for it.

That doesn't mean we think everyone should stay on copper. For many businesses, moving to a digital line before 2027 is the right call — more features, and no cliff edge to think about again. The point is that it should be a decision, not a deadline. Who each line type suits

A single analogue line suits shops, trades, surgeries and small offices that need a reliable number — and any business with an alarm, card machine or fax that depends on copper. At £13.99 a month it's also the cheapest way to keep a landline number, and we can keep it running until 2030.

Multi-line setups suit businesses where one conversation at a time isn't enough — several lines behind one number, with hunt groups passing calls to the next free phone. All the standard line features apply across them.

ISDN2 and ISDN30 suit businesses with an existing on-premise phone system they're not ready to replace. They're mature, dependable services — but they're on the same road to retirement as analogue copper, so it's worth a conversation about timing. See line types for the comparison.

When a line goes down, this is what happens

The jargon, translated

PSTN — the public switched telephone network: the analogue copper system your traditional landline runs on, and the thing being retired from January 2027. Openreach — the company that owns and maintains the physical line network; their engineers install and repair your line whoever bills you for it. Line rental — the fixed monthly charge for having the line at all, billed separately from calls. Porting — moving your phone number between providers or technologies; your number belongs with your business, and it comes with you when you switch. Hunt group — several lines behind one number, ringing the next free phone so callers don't hear engaged. SIP — the standard for carrying calls over a data connection; SIP trunks replace physical lines into a phone system. SoGEA — broadband delivered without a phone line underneath, at FTTC speeds, for premises that no longer need the landline itself. FTTC / FTTP — fibre to the cabinet and fibre to the premises: the two flavours of business broadband, the latter reaching up to 1Gbps.
